Walmart is giving back to Chicago in big ways. In this week's News and Notes, find out how much Walmart gave to Chicago this fiscal year, read Alderman Mitts's op-ed about bringing Walmart to South Africa, find out if going green is really good for business, and help us continue the fight against swipe fees.

Walmart Gives Back to Chicago

In Chicago, we're not just bringing jobs and affordable groceries to the city. Walmart is giving back to the community in big ways. Our donations to Chicago charities this past fiscal year total $5,087,003.74 in cash and in-kind donations, including 1,390,286 pounds of food. Two of the biggest recipients are:

  • Feeding Illinois, which received $412,300 to purchase and distribute food, as a part of Walmart's historic $2 billion commitment to fighting hunger in America.
  • The Chicago Park Districtreceived $50,000 as a subgrantee of the National Recreation and Parks Association. The grant provides much-needed resources that allow the Chicago Parks and Recreation Department to:
    • Bring nutritious meals and nutrition education to children this summer and;
    • Develop a comprehensive nutrition program with the aim of increasing support for low-income children in need of nutritious meals over the summer.

Alderman Mitts Keeps Telling Her Walmart Success Story

By now, it's no secret that Walmart has had a positive impact on Chicago; Alderman Emma Mitts is spreading the word.

In Chicago, New York and now South Africa, Mitts calls Walmart "a good 'corporate community partner,'" pointing to the lives of individuals, families and entire communities that have been changed because Walmart came to their town.

Read Alderman Mitts's latest op-ed where she counters naysayers in South Africa with her Walmart success story; further confirming that Walmart is good for communities - from Chicago, to South Africa.

Green is Good for Business

Walmart Sustainability

In the past few years, Walmart has made some changes to decrease our waste. We've made our packaging process more efficient; we're giving away our food, not throwing it away; and as a result, we've already cut waste by 80%. But is this good for business? We think so.

Watch this Fortune interview with Walmart Executive Vice President, Leslie Dach, where he explains why going green is good for business.
